Luis Suarez has been found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra in a word that is very common in Uruguay. Hence, there have been mixed views with regard to the punishment handed out to Luis Suarez.

Even though most of the British people have expressed their delight at seeing Luis Suarez banned for eight matches, the Uruguayans have not taken at the same way. Especially, the Uruguayan football president Jose Mujica has said that he is extremely disappointed with the outcome of the verdict.

Luis Suarez further caused outrage amongst the British media after snubbing a handshake offer from Patrice Evra in a recent match between the two clubs at Old Trafford in the Premier league. Liverpool ultimately lost the match 2-1, but Luis Suarez did manage to score the goal that provided Liverpool with a faint hint of a draw in the closing stages of the match. Speaking to a radio station recently, Uruguayan football president Jose Mujica said that he has never found Luis Suarez to be racist.

“Suarez is not a racist and never will be. He needs to feel from a distance the human affection that small and great Uruguay has for him. Some don’t understand that he (Suarez) didn’t study diplomatic protocol. He’s a great kid on the pitch, a humble person who came from poverty. For this, we love him,” Mujica said in that interview. It has been alleged that Luis Suarez used the word ‘negro’ to describe Patrice Evra during the match. Manchester United drew with Liverpool in that match. Mujica has described the punishment handed out to Luis Suarez to be exaggerated.
