Uruguay have lost just one of their last five games which have all been World Cup south America qualification in the CONMEBOL group.
They thrashed Columbia by three goals to nothing October last year. Uruguay lost by a slim margin a month later to Ecuador in an away encounter. The team turned their fortunes around with a home victory over their Chilean counterpart then played a draw with Brazil.
The victory in the last game over Peru when other key competitors faltered is the sole reason why they are at the top of the ten man group. Ecuador, their fierce competitor, fell to a 3-1 loss to Columbia ending their unbeaten run.
This loss shot Uruguay to the top of the table with 13 points from 6 games played. Ecuador are second with same number of points but lower goal difference. This is the most probable reason for the double move on the FIFA ranking.
In the game against Peru, the first half remained goalless but that soon changed when in-form striker, Edison Cavani sent the ball to the back of the net with a powerful strike from a Luiz Suarez pass.
Peru really tried to salvage a point as they hoped to move up the table from their lower rung. They just couldn’t defeat the well-coordinated Uruguayan defense.
