It would finally complete the remarkable turnaround in the fortunes of the nation that last won the World Cup in more than five decades ago. Uruguay were one of the surprise packages of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa after they reached the semi-final stage of the competition. They also managed to win the Copa America recently. Due to the presence of players like Luis Suarez and Cavani, Uruguay are the favourites to win the gold medal in this edition of the Olympics alongside Brazil. However, the 2-1 win over the United Arab Emirates was extremely unconvincing.

“You could say that the first games are not my specialty. One of the goals was the result and if we had not managed that there would be no solution. Everything else can be worked on and addressed. This result is vital, as is having secured it after a first half in which we were dominated by the rivals. We had a great 20 minutes in the second period where we controlled but afterwards we could not keep up the same pace,” said the manager after the match with the UAE, which finished as a 2-1 win for the South Americans.
