Uruguay finished fourth in the 2010 World Cup due to some stunning form shown by former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan. However, the nation has regressed inform since the famous 2010 World Cup results.

Their manager Oscar Tabarez has stated that Uruguay will go into the World Cup 2014 looking to make it to the second knockout stage. This will be the major ambition despite possessing the likes of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani in the team. Both these players are regarded as the best strikers in the world right now.

However, Tabarez has had to deal with an ageing squad and the team has been in transition for the last few years. They were expected to take advantage of the home tournament – even though it is taking place in Brazil, it is still in South America – but it now appears that Uruguay do not have much ambition to even better the results of the last edition. A number of teams like Spain, Germany, and Brazil have been ranked as the favourites for the title. Tabarez has said that his team will be going into the tournament well prepared, which is something that would be expected of them.

They will be in a group containing Italy, England, and Costa Rica. Tabarez reckons that it is a very tough group to qualify.

“The idea is to go well prepared and we have the expectation of qualifying for the second round. We have expectations but we cannot predict any result. It is not convenient to put pressure on the team. We have dreams just as everyone else, but we have to work professionally and this is not a matter of illusions or euphoria. Costa Rica is difficult for us, we have already experienced that. It is about reality,” said Tabarez in a local newspaper.
