Since the appointment of Oscar Tabarez as the head coach of Uruguay, the South American team has been enjoying going through fairly impressive campaign at the international stage.

During the 2010 World Cup, Uruguay managed to claim the top spot of their group which consisted of: South Africa, France, Mexico and Uruguay. The team of Oscar Tabarez reached the semi-finals of this competition after claiming victories over South Korea and Ghana before eventually being knocked out by Netherlands.

4 years later and Uruguay made it past the group stages once more. Uruguay was pitted in a very difficult group as they had to play against Italy, Costa Rica and England. Italy and England were the favorites on making it through but surprisingly enough it was Costa Rica and Uruguay, the teams that secured their ticket into the round of 16.

Before Oscar Tabarez had taken control of the South American side, they were struggling on even qualifying for any World Cup.

The 67 year old manager has made a huge impact in the national side but the man who used to be a primary schoolteacher has a different point of view when it comes to football as he wants to make the sport something much more meaningful which extends beyond the pitch.

“I’m a football man, but I understand that there are more important things than football. But there are things that football can help. Sport can contribute greatly to health and education, which are the two measures we use of development, not just of wealth. Football should help marginalized people into society, to contribute to equal opportunity, for government policies to encourage its use as an uplifting activity, to combat idleness.” Uruguay’s Oscar Tabarez said as he expressed the importance that football has which is something that in his own point of view goes far more than just in the playing ground.

There is no denying that Oscar Tabarez is one of the best things in the Uruguayan national football team and it comes to no surprise about hearing the news of him extending his contract with the side which extends through the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
