Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan is credited with rediscovering the passion within Uruguayan football after almost single-handedly guiding them to the semifinals of the 2010 World Cup.

This was clearly evident from his absence in the latest squad announced by manager Oscar Tabarez for the friendly matches against Monaco and Guatemala.

Immediately after learning that he was not included in the squad, Forlan decided to call it a day. The striker’s most capped player for the national team with 112 appearances to date. His goal record from these matches may not be great at just 36 goals, but his contribution to the team in all areas of the pitch has been immense. After struggling to get game time in South American football, Forlan moved to Cerezo Osaka to take advantage of his growing popularity in the Asian regions. Forlan also helped the national team in the Copa America back in 2011. Manager Tabarez said that Forlan remains a huge figure for the current players and that the striker should hang around the squad.
“It was a privilege to enjoy the national team and be part of a group that gave so much to our country, wear the shirt with great people,” said Forlan.Forlan has not appeared for the national team since the last World Cup.”I asked him if he could stick close to the team, and the complex, to allow himself to be seen.He’s a player who has much to give due to his great experience, and has been vital in the selection of the national team roster,” said Tabarez.
