Uruguayan international Luis Suarez came back to haunt Barcelona as he scored the second Atletico Madrid goal in a 2-0 win over Barcelona when the two teams met in a Spanish La Liga clash played at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Saturday night.
Suarez was reluctant to leave Barcelona last summer with a year left on his contract and he had no choicebut to leave after he was told that he’s surplus to requirements. The Ururguay national team player then moved to Atletico Madrid in a cut-price deal worth €6m.
Uruguay player Suarez showed Barcelona what they were missing after be scored the goals that propelled Atletico Madrid to the Spanish La Liga title. The addition of Suarez proved vital to Atletico Madrid who were able to win the league title for the first time in seven years.
Suarez was unable to score against Barcelona last season but that changed this season as he was responsible for the final goal of the game in the colours of Atletico Madrid. The Spanish champions scored all the two goals in the first half, while Catalan giants Barcelona didn’t find the back of the net throughout the game.
Atletico Madrid took the lead through French international Thomas Lemar midway into the first half. Suarez added a second goal with a minute left to play in the first half to make it two goals in two games after netting the winner during the 2-1 win at the home of the Rossoneri in the Champions League last week Tuesday.
The win over Barcelona moved Atletico Madrid to the same number of points (17) as league leaders Real Madrid.
